Why is this test given?

The ACT Explore is a pretest for the ACT college-entrance test. Its primary purpose is to provide information that will help high school students make high school course selections and post high school plans. The District and individual schools also use it as they review their programs and develop improvement plans.

The ACT Explore consists of several sections. The largest portion is an achievement test whose items are similar to those found on the ACT. This section gives students a picture of their academic skills. The assessment also includes an individual interest inventory, items about high school plans, questions concerning high school needs, and items concerning future career goals. As a package, this assessment provides students and parents with important information to support their planning decisions.

What is tested?

The achievement portion of the ACT Explore measures skills in English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning.

Who takes this test?

All students take the assessment in the fall of eighth grade.

How do I read the results?

National percentile rank tells you how a student's score would fit in with the full range of scores found in the nation. A national percentile rank of 70 means that the student's score is equal to or better than 70% of students in the nation. The average student in the United States ranks at the 50th percentile.

The results are reported as national percentile ranks and equalized scores from a low of 1 to a high of 25. An equalized score means that a student with a score of 19 is demonstrating the same skill level no matter which year or what test version the student took.
