The elementary (preK-5) reading/language program focuses on meeting individual student needs through the combined use of whole language and phonics instruction. This combination of instructional approaches, called "balanced literacy," guides students toward proficient and lifelong reading. Students learn grammar, usage, mechanics, writing, spelling and the components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension skills and strategies).

The secondary (6-12) English/language arts program emphasizes skill development in four strands:

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Speaking, viewing, listening and media literacy
  4. Language
