RoseReesPeaceAward

Anthony Bogachev, a junior from Maple Grove Senior High, was honored at the 2014 Rose Rees Peace Awards on April 30. Anthony is the first student from Osseo Area Schools to receive this award but he was also the first person from our district. Recipients are recognized for their demonstrated interest in and outstanding commitment to international relations and world peace. Twenty-one students were recognized this year.

Jen Riewe and Pat Sheehan nominated Anthony for his tireless work on MUN (Model United Nations). Anthony was required to submit a 500-word essay on his vision for world peace.

The Rose Rees Peace Awards have been given annually since 1935 and are named in honor of Rose Rees, president of the Minneapolis Section of the National Council of Jewish Women.

 ANTHONY'S ESSAY:

“There is no them; there is only us.” – Bill Clinton

Anthony’s essay reveals how this quote, seen on a bumper sticker, inspired him to join activities like debate and Model United Nations. Here is an excerpt from his essay:

I discovered that discussion and debate are the most powerful forces in making “them” into “us.” Although debating issues may seem polarizing and counterproductive, it provides a window into the views of the other side – a window usually obscured by hatred and irrational thought. Productive debate forces conflicting parties to construct logical and coherent arguments and gives each party the ability to advocate for their own beliefs, while taking into consideration those of the other side.
