Thanks to a $500 grant from District 279 Foundation, Woodland Elementary has purchased 30 new culturally relevant books to augment the school’s collection of literature. "Culturally relevant" books are books containing content that students can identify with and relate to from their own cultural backgrounds. Recently, Woodland staff gathered before school to peruse the new books, along with the existing collection of culturally relevant reading materials. The open house allowed staff to get better acquainted with the school’s culturally relevant book collection, so that they can help connect students with reading material that will inspire and engage them in reading and learning.
