Freedom School is a new summer program offered at Brooklyn Junior High and North View High this year. It is a six-week program designed to help kids learn to love reading through a multicultural curriculum, to promote a sense of self worth and eliminate the summer slide. Each morning opens with a “Harambee” session including motivational dances and chants celebrating each participant’s individual value.
Freedom School focuses on five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
