In just its second year of existence, Grove Area Percussion, a winter drumline group for high school students in Osseo Area Schools, took top honors at the Minnesota Percussion Association Winter Drumline State Finals in Rochester, Minn., on April 8.
Grove Area Percussion edged Totino-Grace High School by 0.975 points to take the title. (View full results)
“This is a huge accomplishment,” said Paul Terry, music teacher at Maple Grove Senior High and Rice Lake Elementary. “It involved all three high schools, four band directors, seven staff members, countless parent and non-parent volunteers, and the support of all of our school district communities.”
This is the first year that Grove Area Percussion included students from all three comprehensive high schools in District 279. Because not all schools are able to offer drumline as an extracurricular activity, combining talent from Maple Grove, Osseo and Park Center means more students have the opportunity to participate in this high-energy, engaging activity.
Any student who is part of a performing ensemble (choir, band or orchestra) at their respective high school is eligible to participate. This year, more than 50 students were part of the team.
