Exploring Childhood

Course Description:

What are the issues affecting children today? How do parents and teachers meet the developmental needs of children? This course will address career possibilities, types of programs for children, and the development of school-age children.  Students will choose areas of study based on individual interest in current topics such as: divorce, child abuse, cultural differences in parenting, and others. 

Course Standards:

  1. Integrate knowledge, skills and practices required for careers in early childhood education and services.
  2. Analyze factors that influence human growth and development of the school-age child.

Child Development and Parenting

Course Description:

In this course, students will explore a variety of issues surrounding parenting and child development. The text, "The Developing Child" by Holly E. Bisbane, along with various resources will be used to gain understanding of topics ranging from family influences and preparing for parenting, to the physical, intellectual, and social-emotional development of children through age three. Students will conduct research and present on a topic related to Prenatal Development. We may have the opportunity to observe and interact with young children and their parents in our classroom. Further, students will have the opportunity to experience the Real Care Baby program which includes caring for a life-like infant simulator.

Course Standards:

  1. Analyze factors that impact human development and family systems.
  2. Evaluate the effects of parenting roles and responsibilities on strengthening the well-being of individuals and families.

Child Development Lab

Course Description:

How does early childhood education impact development? In this course, students will explore a variety of issues surrounding child development and working with children.  Students will continue where the prerequisite course, Child Development and Parenting, left off and be challenged to put their knowledge to work. The text, "Working With Young Children" by Judy Herr, along with various resources will be used to gain understanding of topics related to the development, care, and education of children ages 3-5.  Students will set up a play-school, plan and teach lessons, and conduct a case study through a series of observations of the children.

Course Standards:

  1. Integrate knowledge, skills, and practices required for careers in early childhood, education, and services.
  2. Analyze factors that impact human growth and development.
